Henderson and Rashford Omitted from England's Euro 2024 Preliminary Roster

Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford are not included in England manager Gareth Southgate's preliminary Euro 2024 roster.

With only 26 days left until their inaugural group match against Serbia, the head coach of the national team has meticulously hand-picked a training squad comprising 33 highly esteemed players. However, it is of utmost urgency that this squad be trimmed down to a maximum of 26 individuals by June 7.

The two most well-known absences are vice captain Henderson, who has been in six tournaments, and forward Rashford, who has attended the previous four big tournaments.

Luke Shaw is included despite having been out since February, and Harry Kane, Harry Maguire, Anthony Gordon, and Bukayo Saka are all listed despite recent concerns about injuries.

Henderson, 33, left Liverpool to join Ajax in January after a brief stay at Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League; Rashford, meanwhile, has struggled for consistency at Manchester United this year.

The non-inclusion of Raheem Sterling in the extensive list is not as surprising as the non-inclusion of his Chelsea teammates, Ben Chilwell, Reece James, and Levi Colwill.

There are a few less experienced individuals within the training group, specifically Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah, who are youthful players from Liverpool. Additionally, Adam Wharton, who has recently received his first call-up, is also part of this group.

The colleagues of the Crystal Palace midfielder are Marc Guehi, Dean Henderson, and Eberechi Eze.

James Trafford, the goalkeeper for Burnley, and Jarrad Branthwaite, the uncapped center defender for Everton, were both added after they initially participated in the senior camp in March.

Nineteen-year-old Kobbie Mainoo holds the distinction of being the youngest player on the team, leaving a remarkable impression during his debut call-up in March. Additionally, joining the renowned roster are Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney.

Noting that players in similar situations had greater seasons, Southgate acknowledged the difficulties of the selections. He acknowledged the effect of a recent injury on Henderson's form and commended his professionalism in the face of the difficult decision.

According to Southgate, Shaw's chances of qualifying for the tournament in Germany appear to be uncertain.

A "significant number" of players, according to Southgate, are sidelined, which will change the composition of the starting team.

Eric Dier did not have room, even though he had been playing well for Bayern Munich since joining from Tottenham in January.

Southgate stated that everyone is eagerly anticipating the headline and acknowledged that it would be foolish to deny it, as well as equally foolish to confirm it. He emphasized that this doesn't imply there isn't a significant amount of work ahead for the team when questioned about whether he has chosen a squad capable of winning the Euros.
